- Why we'll never f*** our friends; mixing friendship and play rarely ends well
Photo by Chang Duong on Unsplash Sometimes the hardest lesson in the lifestyle is learning when not to play. Temptation can look like your cute friend with a wicked smile and a bottle of wine, but experience has taught us that mixing friendship with sex rarely ends well. Here’s why we’ve made one of our golden rules this: we don’t f*** our friends! Let’s be honest, it could be tempting. Especially if you have attractive, cool friends (which you most certainly do)! Y ou’ re close, you trust each other, you have fun together. It’s easy to think, “Why not? We’re adults. We can handle it.” But here’s the thing: in the lifestyle — or in any open, adventurous relationship — mixing friendship and sex can get messy fast. And we’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that keeping those worlds separate is one of the best ways to protect both your heart and your happiness. Emotional Entanglement of Mixing Friendship and Play Sex is such powerful energy. When you share it with someone you already have some level of emotional intimacy with, it creates a new kind of bond, and that bond doesn’t always play nice with friendship. Even with strong communication, feelings shift. Jealousy, guilt and confusion can sneak in like uninvited guests at the afterparty. When you mix friendship with play, you’re not starting from zero because you already share history, trust, and emotional intimacy. That’s what makes it feel safe at first… but it’s also what makes it dangerous. The problem isn’t just the sex, but the emotional residue. You can’t un-know the way someone looks at you in that moment. And when the energy changes, it can ripple through your friendship group, your relationship, and your own sense of safety. Is that worth it? When Boundaries Get Blurry Anyone who enters this lifestyle must have a solid understanding of the importance of rules and boundaries. The lifestyle thrives on rules and boundaries. Consent, clarity, and communication keep it fun. But when you add in friendship, those lines blur. Is that flirty banter still cool? Are they jealous of your other partners? Are you oversharing? What used to feel easy now feels like walking on eggshells. Billy and Suzy chasing another sunset When boundaries blur with someone who already knows your secrets, past, and soft spots, emotions can slip past the walls you’ve built. Maybe it’s jealousy you didn’t expect. Maybe it’s attachment that sneaks in after a hot night. Or maybe it’s the subtle shift that happens when one person wants more connection than the other. Drama Spreads Faster Than Desire Mutual friends, social circles, and events all become potential gossip fuel if things go sideways. You ri sk tension in your wider community, weird vibes at parties, and the kind of awkwardness that makes people look away when you walk in the room. Not sexy. Friends talk. They notice the shift in energy, the inside jokes that suddenly feel a little too flirty, or the tension that lingers after a night out. Before long, people start to take sides, form opinions, or speculate about what’s “really” going on. Even if no one means harm, gossip becomes the currency of discomfort. The result? What was once an easy, safe group dynamic can start to feel complicated and heavy. Invitations get awkward. Trust erodes. People start editing themselves or avoiding situations where both of you will be present. That collective tension often outlasts the fling itself, leaving behind bruised feelings, fractured friendships, and a social scene that is never quite the same again. Plus, are you ready to face all of the questions and speculation? Are you ready to be propositioned by friends or acquaintances who hear about your "naughty little secret"? Protecting your friend group from romantic spillover isn’t about repression but preservation. When you keep the lines between friendship and intimacy clear, you protect the laughter, trust, and connection that made your circle beautiful in the first place. Find your Freaks in the Right Places Okay, so you can't f*** your friends. Where do you find the perfect play partners? We’re big believers in finding play partners through intentional, aligned spaces like alternative dating apps, vetted events, or online communities designed for open-minded exploration. Those environments come with built-in understanding: people there get it (well, for the most part. There are plenty who are lurkers and don't actually get it) . The real ones are already tuned into consent, communication, and clear boundaries. You don’t have to dance around what you’re looking for or risk making a friend feel uncomfortable. Billy and I have found success on the alternative dating apps SLS and Feeld, to name a few. Fortunately, there are more alternative dating apps, sites, and events popping up all of the time. Do a quick search on the internet to find folks and events nearby. It's our belief that it is much better to seek play partners through the proper channels rather than soliciting friends and neighbors. When you proposition someone in your regular social circle, you’re not just taking a personal risk, you’re putting pressure on the friendship itself. Even if they’re open-minded, it can shift the energy of the whole group. In contrast, finding your people in the right spaces means you can play freely and safely, with a clear understanding of what you're there for and without the social hangover. It keeps your friendships pure, your reputation solid, and your pleasure unfiltered. Keep the Magic (and the Mystery) Here’s the truth: we adore our friends! We love laughing, dancing, adventuring, and supporting each other. The time we spend together is sacred. And so is our sexual connection with each other. It's our privacy, our heat, our intimacy that belongs only to us! Keeping those spaces separate protects the magic of both. Keep your friends for laughter. Keep your lovers for fire. When you mix the two, you risk losing both and that’s a price we’re not willing to pay. Let us know your thoughts below! Love loudly. Play wisely. Stay freaky . ❤️🔥
- Loving Loudly: Why Radical Love Is an Act of Resistance
PDA is a fun part of our experience as a couple Freaks in Love is adventurous, sexy, free-spirited, and a little bit rebellious. Lately, we've been thinking about how fragile our way of life really is, and why this is the time to live louder and prouder, because we all deserve the freedom to love who and how we choose. Billy and I live to chase this kind of freedom and adventure by dancing barefoot in the grass, kissing under the stars, and building a life that feels wild and untamed after too many years of hiding who we were or being bound by others' expectations of us. But when authoritarianism rises, which it has, those very freedoms are the first to go. It’s easy to imagine joy, intimacy, and adventure as extras, but to us, they’re the essence of being alive. We spent years in unhealthy relationships, where we couldn't be our true selves, and we're not going to go back to being locked in a proverbial cage. When governments start policing bodies, relationships, or freedom of expression, they’re not just writing laws. They’re stripping away the right to live fully, which is our birthright! A quick breather while hiking Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes on Lake Michigan That’s why Freaks in Love matters so much to us. It’s a reminder that choosing joy, freedom, and intimacy isn’t frivolous. It’s essential. And in times like these, it’s also an act of resistance. Loving loudly is an act of resistance because we live in a culture that often tells us to shrink, to conform, and to keep our joy quiet. Systems of power, whether political, religious, or cultural, thrive on fear, shame, and control. They’d rather we keep our love behind closed doors, follow their rules about who we can love and how, and never question the status quo. We practice non-monogamy, but are very committed to each other. What we do is just a little extra spice that makes everything more exciting and fulfilling. Whether we're reviewing a sex club or attending a spicy party, we are not ashamed of this freedom of expression and desire to explore fantasies that so many people are too scared to do. When we choose to love loudly by publicly celebrating our relationships, our joy, and our freedom, we’re pushing back against that control that is intent on keeping us small and boxed in. We’re saying: We refuse to be erased. Love that doesn’t fit the narrow script (queer love, ENM love, interracial love, love after loss, wild passionate love) often gets ignored or stigmatized. Showing it proudly makes it visible and undeniable. Joy is radical. In times of fear, oppression, and division, joy becomes a revolutionary act. Love expressed freely shows that beauty and connection can’t be stamped out. It challenges power. Authoritarian regimes and rigid systems want obedient, isolated individuals who fall in line and don't question authority. Love binds us together, builds community, and fuels solidarity. Loving loudly says, “You can’t take this away from us.” It inspires others. Visibility gives permission. By loving boldly, you show others they can too, and that ripple effect is a quiet revolution in itself. Right now we still have choices. Censorship, surveillance, and laws about relationships or identity chip away at the life Freaks in Love is built around. We encourage you to express yourselves, be loud and proud, and don't let the bastards get you down! So we’ll keep being our open selves building our wild little world because it’s exactly the kind of life that deserves protecting. Let us ask you, what are you doing to protect your freedom to love, live and desire fully?
- BDSM, Bluegrass & One Very Good Girl's Birthday Weekend Getaway
It was Nearly Nakey night at Minneapolis' gothic dance club, Ground Zero When we saw Billy Strings was playing at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Suzy’s birthday, it was a no brainer. The tickets were immediately bought. Next it was planning the weekend, which we knew would include spoiling Suzy for being such a good girl (wink, wink). This was sure to be a birthday weekend getaway for the books (and the blog). On our adventures, we’re always looking for something a little spicy to add to the itinerary. Normally that means finding a sex club in town, but turns out Minneapolis doesn’t have any established ones. Tragic. The least we could do was go to Sex World, an iconic three-story adult emporium with glory holes and live go-go dancers. Except… they were closed. Suzy had a sexy surprise under her little black dress Plan B: adult shops. We scoped out The Smitten Kitten and Bondesque , and then landed on Reddit, which pointed us to Ground Zero Nightclub , a gothic club with a horror vibe, dancing, and live BDSM shows. Thank you, Reditters! Friday just happened to be Nearly Nakey night, with a mistress doing floggings in their chapel. Yes, a chapel. Obviously, we had to check this out. Billy booked us a gorgeous room at Hotel Ivy downtown, and after tacos at Masa & Agave we were ready for Ground Zero. I slipped on one of my favorites, a black lace negligee with thigh garters and Billy’s beloved crotchless fishnets, hidden under my little black dress. Friday: A Birthday Weekend Getaway of Goth, Go-Go, and... Feeld? The club was buzzing when we walked in. People were dressed to the nines and we saw a mix of gothic, BDSM, queer, and sexy. The vibe felt like a safe, welcoming playground for all of us freaks! The bar had everything from cocktails to mocktails (perfect for us non-drinkers), the dance floor was packed, and go-go dancers were working the crowd. We knew we'd found a spot we would happily return to and the night was just getting started. Posing on a pedicab after a ride downtown We both opted for a mocktail, before walking to the back where the chapel was staged. There were packed pews, fun lighting, and a voluptuous woman tied up front and center while a leather-clad mistress worked her over with whips, floggers, and even dripping hot wax across her chest before scraping it off with a knife. It was a little intense but mesmerizing because you could tell both the submissive and the mistress were loving every second. And then there was a plot twist. I look to my left and realize the guy sitting next to me is someone I’d been chatting with on Feeld. He just showed up, solo, no warning. Kinda bold, kinda sus, definitely not the vibe. I made the rookie mistake of telling him where we'd be before really confirming if he was someone we would want to meet. We asked where his partner was, who was linked on his profile, and he gave us an excuse that she didn't want to come out. Although we give him some credit for trying, when he asked us to dance later that evening, we politely shut him down and got back to the show. Later, with a little encouragement, I ditched the dress and rocked my lingerie with all the other Nearly Nakey babes (including some trans women). Billy was encouraged to take his shirt off (it was quite hot in there with all of those bodies). Let's be real, Billy loves any opportunity to be nearly naked! We danced, mingled, made out, and had an absolute blast before heading back for a sexy hotel romp. (Yes, restraints and a little camera action were involved.) Saturday: Strings, Flings & Sexy Things Saturday morning started with birthday spankings, half in the morning, the rest saved for later. We had another Feeld chat going with the male half of a couple who were also going to the Billy show, which felt kind of serendipitous. The burrata toast with walnut pesto at 112 Eatery Before the concert, we hit 112 Eatery . We were there so early we practically qualified for the senior discount, but the food was out of this world and we wanted to have enough time to eat before the concert. The gnocchi with parmagiano reggiano was so soft and comforting I could have taken a nap in it, and the burrata toast with walnut pesto is getting recreated at home asap. At one point I bonded with another table when we realized it was both of our birthdays and both of us were going to Billy Strings. Small-world magic like that always makes you feel like you're doing something right. The spotlight on Billy Strings at the Target Center The concert itself was absolutely incredible. We will never turn down an opportunity to see Billy Strings, who just keeps getting better. His psychedelic bluegrass feels like pure joy and living in another world where there isn't a care. We danced, we cheered, we melted into the music and felt so lucky to be there to experience the feast for the senses. Afterward, we swung by Gluek’s for the afterparty (where we ran into Feeld guy again, awkward cameo #2 ), then ended up back at Ground Zero for more dancing. It wasn’t as wild as Friday, but still fun. We had to get back to the swanky hotel, so Billy could give Suzy the rest of those spankings. Sunday we closed the weekend in style with spa time at the Hotel Ivy. The hot sauna, lounging in robes sipping hot tea, and a couples massage was the perfect soft landing after a spicy, joyful, bluegrass-fueled birthday in the city. At the end of the day, it’s not about where we go, what we wear, or even who we meet along the way. It's about how we choose to show up for each other and celebrate life out loud. Every birthday, every concert, every unexpected adventure is just another reminder that love should be lived boldly, joyfully, and without apology. Did we end up inviting someone or someones into our swanky king-size bed that weekend? No (if you play in this world, you need to be tested regularly, folks). But that's not what this is about. It's about the journey, following nobody's rules but your own, and having the freedom to explore desires with your partner. The world will always try to quiet us down, but we’ll keep turning up the volume and being ourselves because loving loudly isn’t just fun, it’s necessary.
- Our experience at Nashville's sexy Red Room private club
Rule number one of our relationship: a robust sex life. This was a sentence I'd uttered many moons ago, when we first started dating. Billy, of course, was thrilled with this relationship rule, and who wouldn't be? Exploring pleasure in all of its forms and really taking a bite out of life was a philosophy and mindset that I'd had since my divorce. I'd been given another chance, therefore I wanted to explore my sexuality. Luckily, Billy and I connect sexually on an entirely unparalleled level! It's more than intense chemistry, it's a deep, soul-sharing, passionate pairing where ultimate pleasure is a given. Our sex life is a dream where we feel safe and comfortable to share and indulge in our every fantasy. We keep it spicy, excel in dirty talk, role play various scenarios and truly enjoy exploring each other and our naughty fantasies! It's just fun - which, by the way, is another of our rules. The third is peace. We've both been through it.. so this chapter is all about peace, fun and excitement! Anyway, when the opportunity arose for a spontaneous trip to Nashville, we were all about seeing what kind of adult fun we could get into. After a quick online search and plenty of reviews on Reddit, we decided to spend an evening and first time private club experience at Red Room, and we're so glad we did. They offer private memberships for various lengths of time, and since we were only going to be in town a few days, we opted for the shortest option, the week-long membership. It was only $10, but we'd also have to buy tickets to an event for when we'd be there. They had different events on Friday and Saturday nights, and since we'd be there on a Friday, we'd be attending Fine Ass Friday! To apply for the membership, you answer a few questions about yourself and your sexual preferences, like whether you're a couple, single male or single female, etc., and can upload a few photos and a short bio. There's a 24 hour waiting period to get the acceptance, and we received our welcome email the day after we applied. With the membership, you had the capability of chatting and sending messages to other couples and singles who were members. You could also see who had RSVP'd to upcoming events. It was exciting to get likes and attention from other people, but we were mostly interested in feeling out the situation as a couple. As first timers to an adult sex club, the anticipation of it all had really worked us up and we were eager to explore all of the possibilities. Red Room has rules that need to be followed, most importantly that there is consent given before playing with others. There is a strict dress code, like men cannot wear tank tops or baseball caps, but ladies can wear the sexiest of lingerie out on the dance floor! There is an emphasis to dress up and keep the club classy. Clothes are optional in the back communal room and private rooms. The location is kept hidden until you purchase a ticket to an event after your membership is approved, but it's about 20 miles away from Nashville in this little suburban strip mall off the freeway. Once we pulled into the parking lot, and got over our first-time jitters, we were welcomed in by two very nice employees. I had panicked earlier because I lost my I.D. somewhere on our road trip from Wisconsin to Nashville. Luckily I'd had a picture of it in my phone which was enough to prove my identity. We had called ahead to check and the lady we spoke to was very sweet and told me not to worry. The woman who welcomed us was extremely friendly and all of our anxiety quickly melted away. We walked into a large open area with seating around the exterior and a dance floor in the middle. There weren't too many people there yet, and we had arrived shortly after the party started. A DJ was positioned in the back, and there was a bar on the side. They don't serve alcohol, but you can bring it with you. Billy and I don't drink, so that wasn't an issue for us. The bar does serve mixers and soft drinks, and there were some snacks on a nearby buffet table. The tour continued past the bar into the back rooms. There was an open room with couches and a female glory hole, plus a room with bdsm props. Further down the hall were several private rooms - in these rooms you could leave the door open so others could watch (there was a velvet rope to cordon off the doorway), or you could close the door for private fun. Because we'd read reviews that there isn't a lot of seating when the club is full, we had opted to reserve seats in the main area for an extra cost. It was nice to have space to set down our things and have comfortable seating to observe from and get cozy in. We opted for the James Dean section which was toward the far end of the main room. We wouldn't have had to, since the Friday night we were there it wasn't too busy, and there were a few open tables available. After the tour, we settled in our section and we started feel the energy in the atmosphere. Immediately, a cute energetic woman came right up to me and introduced herself and gave me a big hug! She told me that I am gorgeous and she was so happy to see that I was coming when she'd looked at who had RSVP'd for the party. Honestly, that put the biggest smile on my face and I was completely flattered. She introduced herself to Billy too and told us she was dating the DJ, which she totally fit the part of a cute, sexy DJ's girlfriend. She had this teeny tiny red string bikini on under a pair of loose, baggy jeans, and short auburn hair. Hmmm, I thought, could I? After she went back to her boyfriend, my first instinct to get things heated up was to give Billy a sexy lap dance. It felt so amazing and freeing to be able to bump and grind and let Billy put his hands all over my body without everyone rolling their eyes or telling us to get a room. This was the place for us to be sexually free and it felt incredibly liberating! Even though it was our first time at a place like this, we were in our element. I was wearing a sexy black halter dress, but was eager to change into my lingerie, thigh high stockings and sheer mesh overlay. Billy looked incredible that night wearing black pants and a vintage style light blue short-sleeved button down shirt. We went to the bathroom and I quickly changed (there is also a women's changing room) into the sexy black lace thong bodysuit Billy had gifted me. I threw on a long sleeved sheer black mesh dress over it and I had never felt better. There was starting to be more action around us, so we decided to tour the place ourselves. The single men have to stay in the bar area or can dance or go to a private room if they're invited. There were several couples in the back communal room playing with a large pair of fuzzy dice, each side with a different body part and sexual action. We kept walking until we found an open private room with a sex swing, and quickly went in, closing the door behind us. The energy in the place was palpable, you could hear sex noises all around us, adding to the erotic atmosphere. Billy lifted me onto the sex swing, unzipped, and pulled down his pants so he could enter me. We quickly got into a rhythm and the eroticism of it all made us extremely turned on and me extremely wet, my juices dripping into a puddle on the floor. I moaned loudly as Billy pumped in and out of me, throwing my head back and holding on hard to the swing's straps. It was exhilarating! After, we cleaned up - the club provides towels and sanitizing spray and wipes - and went to the dance floor to move our bodies in a different way. By now, other couples were dancing and letting loose too. Billy and I danced awhile, feeling so close and aroused. We enjoyed that for a few songs and then decided to take another walk. We do wish there had been more people, but at the same time it was an adequate display for our first experience. We saw different aged people and all kinds of body types, but mostly couples and a few singles. For our next public romp, we walked past a couple enthralled with each other, the woman straddling her partner on the couch, and opted for a private room with an arrangement of black pleather ottomans lined up together, forming a bed. Billy had placed me down on my back, throwing my legs over his shoulders and after a few minutes of just completely letting go, I completely let go! Once again, we let our moans and shrieks carry into the club untethered and enjoyed the moment's ecstasy! After this incredible lovemaking session, we went back to our reserved seats to relish in what we had just done and the amazement of the whole night. By this time things were winding down, the club was emptying and we were ready to drive back to our rental and finish the adventure with some more sensual time together, just us. Overall, our experience at the Red Room was fantastic! It was a place where we felt free to be our sexually adventurous selves without any judgement! For our first time, it was perfect to stick to ourselves and observe while also participating in a way we were comfortable. We're planning on returning and checking out other clubs across the country.
- People Fest! A magical birthday weekend at Driftless Music Gardens
People Brothers Band (who host the fest) brought the fire and love Saturday night The Driftless Area of Wisconsin is a unique and scenic region characterized by its rugged terrain, steep hills, deep river valleys, and untouched natural beauty. Unlike much of the Midwest, the Driftless Area was never covered by glaciers during the last Ice Age, leaving its ancient landscape intact. This untouched region is home to winding rivers, limestone bluffs, dense forests, and spring-fed streams, making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. It was paradise for Billy and me as we ascended upon the gorgeous retreat, taking in its vibrant music and cultural scene for a weekend at Driftless Music Gardens for the epic People Fest 2024! People Fest is one of three music festivals at Driftless, the final of the summer season after Bonfire and Boogie Fest. The venue also hosts ticketed music events, weddings and more. It was a funky festival, hosted by Madison's People Brothers Band , featuring a ton of great musicians in funk, Americana, rock, country and hip hop. There was so much soul, you could feel it in your bones. At the top of the hill, we had an incredible view of the main stage The Sounds of People Fest We had to work Thursday morning, so we missed the first several acts but arrived in time to drop off our new (to us) 1969 Aristocrat Lo-Liner camper trailer and take the short trek to the tent stage. We were eager to hear Chicken Wire Empire , a fun bluegrass Americana band that we've seen before. They were jamming out and we nestled through the small crowd so we could dance along! After, we headed past the artisan vendors and food trucks and up to the main bowl, where the brand new stage stood tall, in preparation for Keller Williams - a quirky one-man band with the most fun tunes, who hit fame in the 90s. We brought our blanket and laid it out in front of the sound tent for the perfect view. There was plenty of room to move and dance in front of us and behind us on the large rolling hill, a natural amphitheater perfect for a concert (check out all of the artists here ). Keller Willliams performed Thursday night at People Fest The next show we caught was the infectious party band, Sneezy . This band was so much fun, it was palpable. The group has been together since they were kids, and their chemistry and camaraderie is strong! Download their songs Fat Girlfriend and Church in the Morning - you won't be disappointed. Friday was a special day, it was my birthday! As a leo lady, birthdays have always been worth celebrating to me, and Billy made damn sure I felt special. He gifted me the most gorgeous knitted maxi dress, which garnered me several compliments and made me feel so gorgeous. A few of the vendors made my day when they stopped to tell me how great I looked in it, which put me on top of the world! Billy was pretty pleased with himself too, if I do say so myself! What a day! We first caught Maygen & the Birdwatcher in the tent, with their gorgeous display of flowers adorning the stage. We had seen them at Blue Ox, and I had become a fan of their catchy folk-rock-country tunes. We danced for a bit and then wandered over to the main stage for Cloud Cult. They weren't exactly our cup of tea, but put on an interesting, energetic show! For Billy and me, the absolute highlight of the day was the powerhouse that is Mae Simpson . We weaved our way to the front center and were blown away by the fun, high energy and natural charisma Simpson and her band brought to People Fest. Her song Monsters was a crowd favorite that had folks singing along. Clearly fans had followed her to the Driftless. She also stripped down to her bare vocals with two bandmates singing songs like Plain Clothes Dream, which brought her to tears! The raw emotion witnessed on that stage, coupled with loving gratitude pouring from Simpson's heart was so beautiful to be a part of! And mama can sing! To top it off, Simpson crowd surfed.. yeah, she teased the crowd during her set, and everyone was stoked to see her actually follow through! It was truly epic and Joe and I are both now huge fans. We passed by Simpson later that night and made a point to tell her how much we loved her show, and she was gracious and lovely! This is what I love about small music festivals - you become a part of the music - it's not an experience like anything else. After Mae's incredible set, we headed to the main bowl in anticipation of Galactic , New Orleans based funk-jazz-soul band with decades of experience pleasing crowds. There was a lot of energy coming out of those horns and from the powerful lead singer. We had a blast dancing to the groovy, soulful songs! We definitely didn't want the fun to end that night, it was my birthday after all! We were sure to keep the party going in our Lo-Liner camper trailer. I know I was a little surprised when Billy said the sun had risen and we were still up and at it! Needless to say, we missed several of the early bands Saturday. I know Billy will agree with me when I tell you it was worth it, and I got everything I wanted for my 41st (and we reached our goal.. see below)! We first climbed the hill to hear Madeline Hawthorne , a singer-songwriter, multi-instrument playing Bozeman native. Then we were drawn to the tent stage where The Lavender Project was really pumping up the crowd with their indie-experimental hip hop songs. They were super fun and energetic and we enjoyed what we caught from the La Crosse group. What a treat to be introduced to the powerhouse that is Heatbox , a Minneapolis-based one-man entertainment system. Heatbox has the most fun songs, with his incredibly diverse voice, beat boxing prowess and incredible charisma. We were totally blown away by him and can't wait to see him again. For us, a major highlight was the band that hosts People Fest, the rocking, vivacious, incredible Madison-based band, the People Brothers Band ! We love the positive energy that radiates from the group. It's the kind of music the world is desperate for and that instantly lifts you up. I think Joe and I both got teary eyed when Mama T belted out Restless. Their entire mission is to bring joy and love to the masses through music, and they absolutely succeeded Saturday night. I didn't want their set to end! Galactic brought their funky New Orleans sound to the Driftless Finally, Lettuce closed down the fest Saturday night with their funky, psychedelic, soulful, jammin' tunes! We danced and swayed and had the best time feeling the six-piece band's incredible vibe. They were really a great time, and we were sad when the last note was played! It's worth noting that People Fest curates an incredible variety of artists spanning several different genres including rock, funk, bluegrass, Americana, country, hip hop, soul and so much more. It made for a great experience, ensuring everyone could discover incredible musicians they may not have heard of before. We certainly did! Camping and Kinship Earlier in the summer, we were returning from Big Top Chautauqau near Bayfield, and we turned around in Mercer because we thought we recognized a friend playing music downtown (we did!). Because of this short detour, we passed a very adorable vintage camper trailer and stopped to inquire. It was perfect and a screamin' deal, so Joe went back the next week to pick her up and bring her home. We knew we were going to name the Lo-Liner something after taking it on its maiden voyage at People Fest. The Love Shack was born after tons of good lovin' throughout the weekend! Camping was a breeze and really fun. We parked the Love Shack at the end of the line, giving us a bit more room to set up our scene. There is also camp tenting spread throughout the property, giving attendees the option of setting up shop near the tree line, on a hill or closer to the bowl on flat ground. There is plenty of room, and you'd easily get to find a spot you like each year. There were also lots of port-a-potties - although there was a port-a-potty bandit who was vandalizing them throughout the weekend - and there were two (cold) showers available as well. Suzy enjoys some downtime at camp; we loved the set up We missed out on the cool spa experiences People Fest offered this year, but it's worth noting that there was a on-site spa where you could sauna, get a massage, and take a cool bath. There were a few other services available too that we want to try next year. People Fest is truly about the people, the music, and the beauty that surrounds the magical Driftless Music Gardens. I think it was said best on the website: " We are a kinship who deeply understands that our lives are connected on many levels. We believe that through music, art, and nature, we can strengthen our human bonds and spread love, positivity, and strength in hopes of bringing the world together. We are happy to have a place called home, we are happy to be Driftless Music Gardens." See you next time, Driftless!
- Our First Hotel Takeover: A Sexy Night at Jen's Halloween Party
Dressing up for Halloween is something you're never too old for. We were eager, excited, and honestly, a little nervous — to attend the Halloween-themed hotel takeover hosted by Jen’s Social Networking, a southern Wisconsin swingers group. This was a two-night hotel takeover, but we could only make it Saturday night after spending Friday in Madison. We dressed as Catwoman and Batman, getting ready at a nearby hotel in downtown Delavan (which, to be honest, was a bit of a dump, but the main event hotel had long since sold out). Since we don’t drink, we knew driving back afterward wouldn’t be an issue. When we pulled up, the parking lot was completely packed... a great sign. We parked on the street and headed inside, finding a large, open foyer buzzing with energy. To the left, there was a backdrop for photos; to the right, a registration table where we checked in with our SLS usernames. While the staff pointed out where things were, no one offered a full tour, which felt like a bit of a miss especially for newbies like us. (They did send a detailed email ahead of time, though.) A warm welcome for first-timers would have gone a long way. Setting the Hotel Takeover Scene Everyone was dressed to impress. Costumes were elaborate and sexy. Clearly, this was the group's biggest party of the year. There were prizes for best male, best female and best couple costumes. We found out later that the best way to win was to be naked! That rang true as the winning couples were nude, painted gold trophies (the woman half of the duo made a comment about how she'd eat my you-know-what any day. Blushing!). The main lobby had a DJ and dance floor, and down the hall were several play spaces: an open playroom and a mysterious blackout room (which we weren’t brave enough to try without knowing who was inside). There was also a quieter lounge area with tables and chairs, where we stashed our things. While there, a youngish man approached me, complimenting me heavily and expressing interest after seeing us on SLS. His partner was interested in Billy too, but the guy was a little too aggressive for my taste. Thankfully, we're confident in setting boundaries and gracefully declined. (Consent and communication are everything in the lifestyle!) I think they had a bit much to drink, as we ran into them again later and were accosted for the second time (everyone else was lovely!). Suzy's Halloween costume Heating Things Up Later, I changed out of my catsuit into a dark red and black lace set: bra, g-string, and a tasseled lace belt. That piece (from Fascinating Nights ) always makes me feel like a goddess . As I changed in the open lounge, a woman nearby commented that her large table of friends were all enjoying the show, giving me a rush of adrenaline and confidence. The Leo in me really eats up the energy at these types of parties! We wandered to the pool area, which was impressive: a big swimming pool, a hot tub, and a partitioned play space outfitted with beds, a glory hole, and even a sex sawhorse. We knew we'd be soaking some of those sheets later in the evening. Back in the lobby area, we dirty danced for a bit and recognized a couple we’d seen on SLS. They introduced themselves, and after a little flirting and some kissing (with consent!), they asked if we wanted to do this thing before everyone lost their energy. We weren’t quite ready because this was our first hotel takeover, and we wanted to ease into things, so we politely said we'd circle back if the vibe felt right later. Instead, Billy and I headed over to the play area by the pool. I dropped to my knees, taking him into my mouth, setting the stage for a wet and wild round on the sawhorse, with some very enthusiastic onlookers. We moved from the bed, to the sawhorse, to the chaise. Others being present only made it hotter! The Night Escalates Later, we explored the hotel's main playroom, packed with bodies, benches, and watchers. There was one woman who had the loudest, most fun sounding orgasms! I spotted a sexy man we’d danced with earlier, the one in the cowboy hat. I approached him confidently. He noticed my rhinestone "Naughty" choker and asked, "Are you naughty?""Why don’t you find out?" I teased. After getting the green light, the sexy cowboy joined Billy and me on a bed, and it felt incredible to be the center of attention for two handsome men. After an intense session, we cooled off with a naked dip in the pool. What an absolutely liberating feeling (Some wore swimsuits, but many, like us, embraced total freedom.). A party goer approached us in the pool and told us he had seen us earlier and that our lovemaking was very sexy. What a fun thing to hear! As the night wound down, we had one final, steamy round in the playroom. There were a few people still going at it, but things were winding down. By this time, most of the party had moved back to individual rooms. We didn't want the night to end, but it was time to say goodbye. Final Thoughts We finally headed back to our hotel, exhausted and exhilarated. One thing’s for sure, we’ll absolutely be back to another Jen’s Social Networking event. The crowd was welcoming, the energy was electric, and it was the perfect first experience for us.
- Surf, Sweat & Celebration: A San Diego Story
Billy and Suzy are all grins at House of Black for BDSM night Oh, San Diego… Where do we even begin this steamy love letter to you? Billy was about to hit the big 4-0 (still a certified snack), and we knew we needed to celebrate in a way that was just as wild and unforgettable as he is. His wish was to go surfing again, and not just because I dared him to catch a barrel wave and hinted he might be too old to pull it off. Bratty move, right? You can guess how well that went over. Let’s just say the challenge was accepted. We landed Thursday afternoon to bright, golden skies and lots of palm trees. We’d soon discover those rays were fleeting (it was a bit chillier than back home in Wisconsin), but that first taste of sun on our skin set the tone that we were here to play and enjoy every moment in Southern California. The gorgeous view at The Inn at Sunset Cliffs Our home base for the weekend was The Inn at Sunset Cliffs , a whimsical escape that is an absolute feast for the senses. It has a brilliant blue exterior kissed by the ocean breeze, rows of blooming roses perfuming the air, and the hypnotic soundtrack of waves crashing just steps away. It really was heavenly. Our suite had an ocean view and a double-headed shower (you know we made use of that). Tucked beside Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, we could watch the sun dip below the horizon while we hiked along the cliffs, which we did Thursday evening. It was the perfect location for a getaway for two because every inch of the place whispered romance. We hit Ocean Beach that afternoon, taking in the sights and dipping our toes in the sand and water. The next day, surf lessons with San Diego Surf School delivered pure adrenaline. It was definitely worthwhile for us to get a lesson, and I was a little nervous beforehand, but those nerves were swept away once we emerged ourselves in the experience. No, Billy didn’t catch a barrel (yet), but he caught plenty of other waves. I stood up on my board on the first go, giving me an amazing sense of pride and energy. I was proud to watch Billy's natural athleticism on full display. That's the thing about us, every wave and every challenge, just brings us closer. That thrilling feeling would echo through the rest of our weekend... especially Friday night. Billy and Suzy pose after surfing Pacific Beach We’d done some spicy research before the trip and joined House of Black , a discreet, members-only adult club known for its curated, consent-forward events. Friday was their BDSM night, and while we love all kinds of kink, we're definitely more into pleasure than pain. But the vibe promised exploration, connection, and a hint of the unexpected, so we were game. The anticipation of the trip was absolutely delicious. After becoming members, we immediately noticed this sexy couple and sent a flirty message after mutual photo likes, letting them know we were coming to town. We’d been eyeing them because they radiated joy, sensuality, and that special kind of chemistry we crave in others. They had great photos and seemed in love , which turns us on. Their play style was perfectly aligned with ours. We were looking for a sexy MFM. They were looking for connections.. in particular, he connects and plays, she connects and watches. We were dealing with a Cuck Queen fantasy, and that was a yummy prospect for both of us. Friday night arrived. Nerves buzzed as we pulled up to the low-key industrial building. House of Black doesn’t scream sexy from the outside, but inside it looked like a typical club experience. There were only about 30 people, all beautifully dressed and vibing. Billy looked sexy as hell in his black shirt and pants. I wore the slinky little number he bought me that day, which was black, short and showed off my curves in all the right ways. One of the sexiest snapshots from our night at House of Black (thanks, Libby!) Billy and I had our usual pre-adventure jitters, but here’s the thing: we trust each other completely. That’s what makes this kind of exploration not just sexy, but soul-deep. It’s not just about play, it’s about choosing each other again and again, no matter what room we walk into. Libby, our stunning host, greeted everyone with warmth and authority, laying down the rules: ask before touching, respect the energy of scenes, and mind the vibe. We got a tour, there were playrooms galore, themed spaces, a bar with snacks (no booze this night), and plenty of cozy nooks for mischief. We'd say the energy was intimate, inviting, and pulsing with curiosity. Our tour included a quick stop to witness a man using leather-tasseled whips on a woman bent over a spanking bench. Later, we caught a glimpse of him tracing a large butcher knife gently over her bare ass. No blood, thankfully, just theatrical intensity and erotic trust. Along the way, a cute naked woman with short gray-lavender hair was being tied up by a partner. Another couple made use of a second X-cross with restraints and spankings. We spotted our online crushes, who we're going to call Veronica and Ronald, and sparks flew . He was tall, mocha-skinned, and radiated chill confidence. She was a petite blonde, glam and gorgeous, with a bubbly, fun aura. I loved her mauve faux leather ensemble and sexy, draped jewelry. We exchanged flirty hellos and easy laughter. My body hummed as Ronald’s hand brushed mine, anticipating what was likely to happen. Billy and I exchanged a glance and a quick word when we had a mome nt alone. You in, he asked? I nodded, fuck yes. We found a quiet spot outside to talk boundaries and desires. I snuggled in the middle seat of the coach, sandwiched between Billy and Ronald.. a position I'd be in again later. We confirmed that the chemistry was instant and the alignment was spot-on. When Billy suggested finding a room, we all leaned in with matching smirks, and got up off our seats! The first available room had another couple already mid-play, but there were two more open beds. We asked if we could take space next to them and they said yes. Veronica started going down on Ronald, while I kissed and teased Billy, before taking him into my mouth with a grin. Shortly after heating things up, Ronald joined Billy and me on the bed with his electric touch. The sensation of being adored and filled by two attentive, sexy men was otherworldly. It was such a turn on to hear Ronald moaning, knowing that he was loving every moment. I couldn't help but stare intensely into Billy's eyes as he devoured me, and made me come again and again. The moans, the rhythm, the eye contact, it was all delicious. Taking a quick breather between dancing at Spin night club. After a quick reset in the bathroom with Veronica (girl code always), we moved to the Glam Room, which had a large bed with red sheets and a rhinestone headboard, and an X-frame in the corner. Veronica took off her top, teasing us from the vanity as we resumed our three-way scenario of pleasure, this time with one of our favorite toys. Even surrounded by newness and thrill, Billy and I ground each other. Every moan, every stroke, every moment was another reminder: I’m so damn lucky to be his. We’re partners in curiosity, pleasure, love and life. After a few more orgasms, we all embraced in post-play bliss. We even made plans to have another round after meeting at Wonderfront Music Festival the next day. Billy and I weren’t done with our night yet, we were flying high from our incredible rendezvous so we opted to go to Spin, a nightclub open til 4 a.m. with multiple DJs and dance floors. We danced for a couple hours until it was time to go back to the inn, where Billy and I had a hot-as-hell reclaiming session, with the Pacific singing us to sleep early in the morning. Saturday brought a slower start and lunch with an old friend, followed by an evening of incredible music featuring Portugal. The Man, Janelle Monae, Foster the People, and Anderson .Paak. The weather didn’t really cooperate, as we got caught in the rain, but the music was bumping and the festival was massive! Our new friends couldn’t make the fest, but offered to pick us up and then head back to our motel for more fun. While we absolutely planned on meeting Veronica and Ronald for a late-night encore, by the time the music ended we were totally wiped (hello, 40!), and passed along some sexy souvenir photos instead. Anderson. Paak closed the festival Saturday evening at Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival We’ll be back, Ocean Beach. For the surf, the sun, and the spice. Because if this trip taught us anything, it’s that turning 40 is just the beginning of the wildest rides. As the weekend wrapped and we listened to the waves crash one last time, I couldn’t stop admiring Billy, the man who turns me on, makes me laugh, takes care of my heart and soul, and keeps showing up for this wild, wonderful life we’re building. This trip wasn’t just about surf lessons or late-night escapades. It was about trust, thrill, companionship, and letting our freak flags fly together. We keep pushing boundaries, not just in bed, but in how we love and do life - freely, fiercely, and without apology. With every adventure, our bond deepens. We’re not just in love. We’re freaks in love , and that feels so damn good!
- 🔥 Portland Nights: Our Spicy Spring Break at Club Privata 🔥
When Billy and I set out to explore the wild beauty of Oregon, we knew Portland had to be on the itinerary. We'd both been to the Pacific Northwest, but never Oregon. Despite this, we’d always felt drawn to the vibe of the Rose City, a place where you can let your freak flag fly without apology. Naturally, that meant a night at one of Portland’s famed sex clubs was in order. After doing our research, we set our sights on Club Privata , nestled downtown and just a stone’s throw from our hotel, Hotel Zags . From the website alone, it looked sleek, sexy, and like just the kind of place where we could bring our spring break to a steamy crescendo. Our journey to Portland had already been the stuff of dreams. Billy towed our vintage 1969 Aristocrat Lo-Liner camper west with a buddy for some snowboarding, and I joined him later for an unforgettable road trip. Think: misty mountains, lush forests, dramatic coastlines, hidden hot springs, and waterfalls that looked like they’d been pulled from a fantasy novel. But we saved the cherry on top for last: one wild night at Club Privata. The famous haystack rock at Cannon Beach, OR We rolled into Portland late after a hike at Multnomah Falls, freshened up, and hit the club just before 11 p.m. We’d signed our waivers ahead of time (pro tip!), and the staff welcomed us like VIPs. The owner spotted our Wisconsin ID and comped us on the spot, which was a gracious move that set the tone for the night. We had a feeling he could tell we were going to put on a show. First impressions? Gorgeous . Dim, moody lighting, a bar and dance floor that buzzed with energy, and a cage for anyone bold enough to hop in and strut their stuff (I was!). Club Privata spans three stories, with each floor offering its own blend of lounge vibes, sexy spaces, and playful possibilities. We got the grand tour from a lovely host who walked us through the club’s layout, rules, and a very smart system for keeping the space clean and safe. Beds marked with two condoms on a clean sheet? Game on. Toss the sheet in the hamper when you're done, and a staff member swoops in to sanitize and reset. Efficient, discreet, and honestly impressive. We started the night dancing, easing into the energy. I changed into my new sheer black dress with nothing underneath but a tiny g-string. I felt like a goddess. Billy, of course, looked devastatingly handsome, my favorite accessory of all. The crowd was sexy and respectful, a great mix of couples and some solo men, all tuned in to the respectful, body-positive energy. We kicked things off on the second floor, where Billy and I claimed a bed and gave a few lucky onlookers quite the show. Public play always gets our adrenaline going, and this was no exception. It was intense, erotic, and oh-so-fun! Later, we moved upstairs to the third floor, where we were told was the heart of the action. The middle bed, with sheer canopies and surrounding seating, became our stage. We shared space with beautiful couples on either side, and the vibe was pure electricity. At one point, we headed back to the second floor where Billy added one of our favorite toys, a jeweled butt plug, to the mix. A couple who had been watching us earlier asked to join, but we’d agreed to keep things just between us that night. Still, we invited them to parallel play on the couch, and the shared heat in that room? Next-level. Our final round upstairs was the showstopper . Me on top, pink plug sparkling, putting on a performance for the room. A buff redhead and his curvy partner were going at it next to us, while another gorgeous pair mirrored our rhythm on the opposite side. A woman approached us mid-play and asked to join; we declined the invite but shared a kiss and let her bask in the moment. There’s something wildly freeing about being in a space where sex is art, pleasure is celebrated, and exhibitionism is encouraged. Club Privata absolutely delivered. The staff were incredible, the vibe was sultry and inclusive, and the layout gave us everything we wanted and more. We left just after 2 a.m., not because we were ready, but because the crowd had thinned and our hotel bed was calling. Back at Hotel Zags, we kept the night going, still glowing from the energy of it all. Would we go back? In a heartbeat. Next time, we might even plan two nights in a row. Until then, Club Privata, thank you for the unforgettable finale to a magical adventure.
- A review of the rugged, wonderful Mount Bohemia Ski Resort
Discover Mount Bohemia Ski Resort Nestled in the pristine wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Mount Bohemia is a hidden gem for adventurous skiers and snowboarders. Renowned for its extreme terrain and abundant snowfall, this unique resort offers an unparalleled experience for thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. It's also where Joe works as a ski patroller during our long, Wisconsin winters. Mount Bohemia boasts over 900 acres of skiable terrain, featuring some of the most challenging runs in the Midwest. With a vertical drop of 900 feet, the resort is home to steep chutes, deep glades, and breathtaking backcountry trails. The natural, ungroomed snow provides a true test of skill, making it a haven for advanced skiers and snowboarders. To say that I was scared to ski at Mt. Boho is an understatement! But I knew having Billy as my guide would make my experience truly memorable. The way he spoke of this place, I knew it was something special, especially since Billy had lived out West for a decade. Snowboarding is his greatest love, except for his children and me, of course :) The resort receives an average of 273 inches of snow annually, thanks to the lake-effect snow from nearby Lake Superior. This ensures a long ski season and consistently excellent conditions, allowing visitors to enjoy powder-filled adventures from December through April. And the views are spectacular! Unfortunately, the winter of 2023-2204 produced a dismal amount of what's typically dropped from the sky, so not all of the runs and ski areas were open. This did not deter us, I wasn't ready for the more difficult terrain. Rustic and Remote Part of Mount Bohemia's charm is its rustic and remote setting. The resort is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the area, which means you won't find any fancy lodges or five-star restaurants here. Instead, you'll experience a back-to-basics atmosphere that emphasizes the raw, unspoiled nature of the landscape. Unique Experiences Mount Bohemia is not just about skiing and snowboarding; it's about embracing the adventure lifestyle. The resort offers unique experiences such as guided snowcat skiing tours, where you can access untouched backcountry terrain. For those looking to unwind, the Nordic Spa at Mount Bohemia provides a perfect retreat. With outdoor hot tubs, a Finnish sauna, and a cold plunge pool, it's an ideal spot to relax and rejuvenate after an exhilarating day on the slopes. It's always expanding every season, and the owner always gives people a say in what they'd like to see. To be honest, it may have been what I was most looking forward to after an adventurous day trailing Billy! The hot tub is sometimes jokingly referred to as, "dude stew" because the hill tends to attract more men than women. Since everyone is jonesin' to sit and soak after a hectic day on the slopes, we knew we'd be taking advantage. We got a little naughty in the hot tub, but not so much that anyone kicked us out or reported us! Community and Culture The community at Mount Bohemia is tight-knit and welcoming. Whether you're a seasoned local or a first-time visitor, you'll find a sense of camaraderie among fellow adventurers. The resort hosts various events throughout the season, including ski races, music festivals, and themed parties, fostering a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Mount Bohemia Ski Resort is a destination like no other. Its rugged terrain, abundant snowfall, and commitment to preserving the natural environment make it a must-visit for those seeking a genuine and thrilling outdoor experience. If you're ready to push your limits and embrace the spirit of adventure, Mount Bohemia awaits.
- We found Sasquatch in Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park is one of the nation's most stunning examples of our incredible natural surroundings, and the location that would introduce a fun freakiness that would bring us excitement, laughter and stimulation! Glacier had been on my travel bucket list for the last several years, and when I was going to be turning 40 I knew it would be the perfect location to usher in a new decade. And to do it with my new love - how absolutely perfect! Billy and I flew into Bozeman they day I turned 40 (gah!) and picked up our rented vintage Toyota Chinook camper truck. Once Billy and the truck's owner stopped bonding over mountains, snowboarding and vintage vehicles, we were off! We had to drive several hours to get closer to Glacier's west entrance, which is a five hour drive north. Since it was later in the day, and the Chinook was a manual, he was taking the wheel and, for some reason, driving barefoot! I was spent so I crawled up in the camper's bed and snoozed away until my love informed me he found a spot for us to park at Flathead Lake. We tuckered out, fell fast asleep, and woke up to the most stunning crystal clear lake. I was so proud Billy had found such an incredible location for us to start our epic vacation! It was in that moment that we knew we were in for an incredible adventure together. Suzy poses next to the Chinook on Going-to-the-Sun Road The sun was high in the Montana sky as we ventured into Glacier National Park, its rays filtering through the canopy of pine trees. The rugged trails, aqua lakes and breathtaking vistas were a perfect backdrop for our adventurous spirits. Billy and I had always shared a love for the outdoors, but this trip was special—a blend of nature's grandeur and the intimate bond we cherished. Our first big trip together. As we hiked, the conversation flowed easily. We laughed, shared stories, and reveled in the serene beauty surrounding us. It was during one of these conversations that we stumbled upon a topic that would take our adventure to an entirely new level. "It's pretty squatchy out here." Billy said. I chuckled, the idea seeming both whimsical and oddly thrilling. "Bigfoot is definitely real. Do you think we might run into him?" He grinned, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Definitely, and I'm intrigued." Intrigued? The way he said it sent a shiver down my spine. "Intrigued how?" We went off the trail, just slightly, and perched up on a large rock near the aqua blue Avalanche Lake. The cool stone beneath us contrasted with the warmth of the afternoon sun. "Well," he began, his voice dropping to a husky whisper, "I've read that some people have... fantasies about encountering Sasquatch. You know, in a more intimate way." My heart started to race. Billy and I had discussed a few of our sexual fantasies, but the primal, untamed thought of a steamy Sasquatch encounter made a flush of heat run through me, especially because I knew he would be playing the role of the great, mythical beast. We'd already walked around Avalanche Lake, and knowing there were Grizzly bears nearby, I was eager to get back on the path, and to the parked Chinook. Suddenly, Joe grunted at me. I looked back and he was grinning that slightly crooked smile I had grown to love so much, which put an immediate smile on my own face. He grunted again, then lunged toward me in a playful manner. I screamed and ran down the trail, laughing, as he quickly grabbed me from behind. I turned and wrapped my arms around his neck, kissing him deeply between giggles and grins. With a shared glance after a quick make-out session, knowing this was more than just a playful idea. It was a chance to deepen our connection in a way that was as wild and untamed as the landscape around us. Once we were back to the Chinook, we jumped in the back and I asked Billy to unzip his pants. The parking lot was packed, with people buzzing around, but that wasn't going to stop our primal urge. I put him in my mouth and made sure he wouldn't ever forget this moment. After, buzzing with excitement knowing that other tourists probably heard us, we drove to nearby Duck Lake, a rustic campsite alongside a lovely body of water and rocky beach. After a quick dinner, it was time to get ready for bed. "I really want to know what it's like to make love to Squatchy," I purred to Billy. "You're about to find out." He growled, grinned, and pounced as I laughed and embraced him. We made incredible, passionate love, and a new fantasy was born. Suzy found Squatchy in Glacier National Park. The memory of our shared fantasy was a secret thrill that will stay with us forever, and lead to more exciting fantasies - wild and untamed - that we were both eager to fulfill.
- Blue Ox Music Festival, one of the best weekends of the summer
The sun finally peeked through the clouds once Sierra Ferrell stepped on stage My first experience at Blue Ox Music Festival , nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was an enchanting one that would feed my music-loving soul! It was 2021, the first year back after Covid had put an abrupt halt to events, and I was a few months separated from my now ex-husband, ready to do all of the things I'd always wanted to. After a few magical days immersed in a vibrant tapestry of sound, nature and community - I knew I'd be back. Billy and I went together in 2023 - our first summer together - and were back for the Blue Ox Music Festival's 10 year anniversary in June of 2024. I think we're both still on a high from having our senses enhanced in the most electric way! Read on for our highlights and takeaways from this most special festival. 🎶 A Celebration of Music and Community First and foremost, Blue Ox is a celebration of music and community. It's renowned for its eclectic lineup, showcasing the finest in bluegrass, Americana, and roots music. This year's festival featured an impressive array of artists , from beloved headliners (Band of Horses, Sierra Ferrell, Sam Bush Band, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway) to emerging talents (Maygen & The Birdwatcher, Kassi Valazza, The Spooklights), and local favorites (Them Coulee Boys and Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, to name a few), each bringing their unique rhythms and melodies to the stage. As the music reverberates through the trees, you'll feel an undeniable connection to the performers and fellow festival-goers, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway blew us away! Everyone is very friendly, open and cool! It's the kind of music community that welcomes everyone, where inhibitions melt away and music lovers are invited to let the sound overtake them without fear of judgement. What I love about Blue Ox is that the festival is capped at 5,000 people. On Saturday, it definitely felt like there were 5,000 people there, but because everything is spread out among the pines and hardwoods, there is always somewhere to find a moment of solace if necessary. But back to the music! Blue Ox takes place in the Pines Music Park (formerly Whispering Pines Campground) right on the outskirts of Eau Claire. There are three stages: the Main Stage, Saloon Stage and Backwoods Stage. The first two are in the main area of the bowl, and as the name would suggest, the biggest acts perform on the Main Stage. What's great is there is no real break in music because once the main stage act is done, the band at the Saloon Stage starts wailing. The backwoods stage is in one of the unreserved camping areas, a great location for late night tunes and debauchery! There is also a family stage in the family camping area where lots of fun activities are planned for those with littles. And if you want to stay up really late, hit up the Potluck String Band campsite where the pickers are always playing, and musicians stop by to lend their talents. Let's start with our Thursday music round-up. First, it's not possible to see every single band, except on Thursday when there are fewer acts on the Backwoods Stage, so keep that in mind. The first act on the Main Stage was Kazzi Valazza, who offered up her gorgeous vocals and acoustic guitar playing. Her haunting music would be the perfect soundtrack for a hip coffee shop, in fact she commented that the Main Stage was a bit out of her comfort zone. We really enjoyed when she brought out another musician to offer lead guitar to her tunes. Our only critique is it was a bit slow for the opening of the entire festival. I would have loved something more up tempo to really start things out with a lot of energy! But, not to fear - the energy was on the way Excited for Thursday shenanigans! Lindsay Lou has been a regular at Blue Ox for several years, and it's easy to see why! Her voice is beautiful and strong, melodies flow effortlessly. Lindsay and her band were outstanding and I'm so glad I had been listening to her music before the festival to really appreciate it and sing along. Our highlight of the night was Daniel Donato and Cosmic Country. We fell in love when they performed at Blue Ox in 2023, and were eager to dance to their cosmic country crunchy rock! Daniel is a guitar phenomenon, incredible with his unique sound. It's kind of hard to explain, but his music will make you feel amazing and you'll be dancing! He also joined Leftover Salmon for the last show on the Main Stage - and to nobody's surprise, they were amazing. We are huge fans of The High Hawks, which is a band made up of members from the likes. of Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, Hard Working Americans and Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. They're super fun and we were stoked to see them after a fun gig at Whitewater Music Hall in Wausau. Unfortunately, as in Blue Ox tradition, it rained during their double set on the Backwoods Stage, so we stayed in our camp which was nearby. Now on Friday, there was no need to worry about a slow start, because hometown heroes, Them Coulee Boys were first up on the main stage and they brought the fire! You could tell how proud they were to play for the crowd, and we were happy to dance along! I wanted to give a huge shout out to Maygen & The Birdwatcher who opened the Saloon Stage. I'd just started listening to the Minnesota-based band a few months before the fest and I was pleased to hear them pass my expectations. The Devil Makes Three was a Friday highlight The Devil Makes Three is such a fun, sexy band! It's impossible not to bob your head and tap your feet to their electric troubadour punk sound. They absolutely killed. We were huge fans of Frogleg closing out the Backwoods Stage Friday night too. Nothing quite compared to the incredible display of music and a culmination of exactly what Blue Ox should be so much as Saturday. Del McCoury Band was the crisp, classic bluegrass that you want to hear. Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway absolutely smashed that stage! Billy kept saying Molly is like a female Billy Strings and I have to agree. Sam Bush Band proved why he's invited back year after year after year. Sierra Ferrell lived up to the hype Like everyone else standing among us, we have a huge crush on Sierra Ferrell! She is the cutest thing you'll ever see up on stage, but her voice is so effortlessly vibrant and perfectly accompanies the jazzy bluegrass country sound. She was totally mesmerizing, and it's no surprise that the clouds began to break and the sun finally shone once Sierra hit the stage. Her music is so fun, I really loved singing along to Fox Hunt, Silver Dollar and Dollar Bill Bar. But when she sang American Dreamin, I couldn't help but tear up, it was just so beautiful, and in that moment with the gold-lined clouds glistening behind Ms. Ferrell I felt truly grateful for my life. What a gift it was to be there! Tan & Sober Gentlemen were super fun and high energy on the Saloon Stage, and then it was Pert Near Sandstone's turn to shine again. The host band has quickly become one of our favorites to see live, and I will jump at any chance! We saw them very up close and personally at the Midwest Telefest in the Porcupine Mountains last February. They played at the American Legion in White Pine, Mi and it was absolutely insane absorbing their incredible talent on that tiny dance floor. Anyway, they were incredible on the Main Stage, showing the crowd so much genuine appreciation. They brought up friends from Them Coulee Boys, Kyle Tuttle, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, Sam Bush, and some others and absolutely brought the house down! We were stoked for HHG who were closing out the bowl on the Saloon Stage. They brought the energy and charisma we've grown to love more and more over the years. We just love these dudes! It's always fun bumping into singer and guitarist Adam Greuel, who we ran into earlier in the fest. After, we listened to the Burbillies, a mish-mash of musicians who played 80s cover bluegrass - it was absolutely mind blowing and so much fun! Perfect ending to the most magical few days of foot-thumpin' tunes amidst the pines. Horseshoes & Hand Grenades with Kyle Tuttle 🌟 Family-Friendly Fun Blue Ox is a family-friendly festival, welcoming attendees of all ages. You will find all ages at Blue Ox, from the tiniest little humans to those who've seen some things in their lifetime! We love that Blue Ox is family-friendly without being kid-centered. We would be very comfortable bringing children to this festival, but it sure is fine to let loose as adults too! The Kids’ Zone offers a variety of activities to keep the little ones entertained, from arts and crafts to interactive workshops, and lots and lots of bubbles! With plenty of open space for children to run and play, parents can relax and enjoy the music knowing their kids are having a blast in a safe and engaging environment. 🍴 Culinary Delights and Artisan Wares Indulge in a diverse selection of food and beverage options that cater to every palate. From local food trucks serving up mouthwatering dishes to craft beer and cocktail vendors, there’s something to satisfy every craving. We were very pleased with the non-alcoholic options under the tent. There were two NA beers on tap, plus cannabis-infused sparkling water from Honeybee Cannabis Co. As non-drinkers, we truly appreciated all of the options! Additionally, the festival's marketplace features a curated collection of artisan crafts, clothing, and unique souvenirs, allowing you to take a piece of Blue Ox magic home with you. Blue Ox merch this year was fantastic! We picked up a couple of hats and shirts which we'll proudly adorn. Billy cooking a steak dinner at camp 🌌 Unforgettable Nights Under the Stars As the sun sets and the stars begin to twinkle, Blue Ox transforms into a magical nighttime wonderland. With campfires crackling, lanterns glowing, and spontaneous jam sessions springing up around every corner, the festival’s nighttime ambiance is truly something to behold. Share stories, make new friends, and let the music carry you into the early hours of the morning. All camping at the pines is considered primitive, with reserved and unreserved camping, but there are amenities including very clean porta-potties, a building with (warm this year!) showers, and electric capabilities. We decided to camp early and arrived on Wednesday to find the same spot we'd secured the year before in the general unreserved area. We were up on a little ridge, with the Backwoods Stage in our downhill back yard. It was a great spot, and we were pleased to perch ourselves up on the ridge between the music acts.we couldn't miss. Look at that gorgeous Blue Ox background Blue Ox Music Festival 2024 was a celebration of ten years in the pines, an unforgettable weekend of music, nature, and community. Whether you’re a seasoned festival veteran or a first-time attendee, you’ll find your place in the heart of this vibrant and welcoming celebration. See you at Blue Ox next year!
- Our spontaneous trip to Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI
Standing toward the top of Mt. Ashwabay ski hill, where the view of Lake Superior & Big Top are clear While paging through the Blue Ox Music Festival program, Billy was quick to discover an ad for Big Top Chautauqau, a Bayfield, WI area landmark, which was promoting a performance by musical artist Shakey Graves , whose music combines folk, bluegrass, country and rock 'n roll in a unique one-man band kinda way. The man defies easy categorization, but can be found in Americana folk-rock crowds. Billy's always been a fan, and I'm always down to become one when its warranted, so we quickly jumped online for tickets to the show and another spontaneous trip was born. Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqau is a 900-seat music venue and performing arts center featuring an iconic blue and grey tent canvas ceiling, with open side panels making for the perfect indoor/outdoor atmosphere. The venue is at the bottom of Mt. Ashwabay Ski & Recreation area, giving patrons the chance to climb to the top and take in the view of Lake Superior in the distance. I was stoked to finally see a show at Big Top Chautauqau, and Billy was happy to be the one to take me for the first time. The venue itself is worth a trip to Big Top if you've never been. Big Top hosts 60 events during the steamy summer months, bringing in headliners like Willie Nelson and Bonnie Raitt, regional talents and original productions. You may be familiar with Shakey Graves' 2011 song Roll the Bones , or the 2014 release, Dearly Departed . These songs showcase his raw talent, his strong vocals, and his unique ability to weave story into songwriting. Shakey Graves performs with his band at Big Top Chautauqau With a suitcase drum under one foot, a tambourine under the other, and a guitar in hand, he created a full-band sound that mesmerized audiences. His dexterity and innovative use of percussive elements set him apart, showcasing not just musical talent but a flair for showmanship. This was the kind of music we expected to hear, but we, along with the entire crowd, were a bit surprised after the first song. Shakey started with Roll the Bones, the song that made him famous, and the crowd was eager to sing along. We were a little offended by the general lack of audience participation and dancing. Billy and I are not shy on the dance floor; it's one of the best parts of attending a concert - the ability to feel the music in your bones and to express that through dance! We stood up, as did the folks ahead of us in their pew (the venue has old church pews as part of the seating - a very cool touch), for the first tune, but it seemed to be a sitting crowd so we stayed seated for the rest of the show. As a side note, Big Top does have a marked off area to the side of the stage that is designated for dancing, but the few teenagers standing over there didn't get the memo and just used the space to gather. A look under the famous blue and gray canvas tent After Roll the Bones, Shakey brought out a full band, all adorning matching, stylish red jumpsuits and played a new sound, evolving from his stripped-down solo performances to a bigger production. This broader sonic palette incorporated unexpected arrangements and experimental sounds. It just shows his willingness to push creative boundaries and explore new musical territories. I think the crowd was a little surprised - we definitely were - but we still enjoyed the gorgeous summer evening of music together. On stage, Shakey Graves is a force of nature. His dynamic performances, marked by spontaneous energy and genuine connection with the audience, create an unforgettable live experience. Whether performing solo or with a full band, he commands the stage with charisma and authenticity. We had a blast wandering around the Big Top grounds, climbing the ski hill to catch a view of lovely Lake Superior, and splitting a bottle of NA wine (it was pretty good, actually) before Shakey took the stage. Do yourself a favor, and grab some tickets to an upcoming show at Big Top Chautauqau!
